Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better called Queen Latifah in the United States is a performer and actress. In music, film and television, Queen Latifah has won the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and nominations for the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifahs parents split up at the age of Latifah, then ten years old. Latifah was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah is a word that means gentle and generous. The name was given by her cousin to her when she was eight years old. Latifah has always been tall and tall. Standing 5'10" She was a center forward on her high school basketball team. As part of a school production she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was a member of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her beatboxing career. Latifah is among the original members of the Flavor Unit, which was at that time a collective made up of DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to Yo! MTV Raps The Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was interested by the tune. The singer signed Latifah and dropped her first single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
